Anti-Wrinkle Injections After Care
​
Normal Side Effects and How to Manage Them
After treatment the skin may be red, swollen and sometimes bruised at the injection sites. These after-effects will resolve naturally, usually within a few days however it may take up to 2 weeks for more extensive bruising to resolve. Occasionally you may experience a headache after treatment which may last 1-2 days. Usually this is controlled by taking simple over the counter pain killers such as paracetamol.
What to Avoid

• Avoid applying makeup to the treated area for 24 hours, this can help reduce the risk of infection.
​
• Avoid any extremes of temperature for the next 24 hours, for example have a tepid shower or bath rather than hot.
​
• Avoid exercising or strenuous activity for the first 24 hours post-treatment.
​
• Do not go swimming or use saunas or steam rooms for at least 24 hours post-
treatment.
​
• No excessive alcohol on the day of the treatment.
​
• Do not lie flat or face down for at least 4 hours after treatment. Remain upright for 4 hours after treatment, this can help to reduce product migration.
​
• Avoid touching or rubbing the treated after for at least 24 hours after treatment, doing so may affect treatment results.
​
• Avoid any further cosmetic procedures to the treated area for 2 weeks following treatment, including permanent makeup and skin treatments.
​
• You must seek medical attention and contact your practitioner if you experience any signs or symptoms of infection after treatment. Infection can present as hot, red shiny skin, there may be pus formation and you may have a fever or feel generally unwell.
What To Look Out For
​
• You must seek emergency medical attention if you experience any severe allergy symptoms after treatment. Symptoms may include
rash, facial swelling and breathing difficulties.
​
• Contact your practitioner as soon as possible if you notice any other unwanted side effects.
​
• Allow 2 weeks before assessing results of treatment. If after 2 weeks there is any persistent unevenness or the product as not fully taken contact your practitioner for review.
​
Dermal Filler
​
Normal Side Effects and How to Manage Them
​
• Immediately after dermal filler injections the treatment area may be red, tender or swollen. The redness and tenderness should improve after 48 hours. Swelling is often worse on days 2-3 after injection, improved by day 5 and resolved by 2 weeks.
​
• For significant swelling contact your practitioner for advice. Swelling may be reduced by regular cold compress, anti-inflammatory medicines such as Ibuprofen (after 24 hours, if safe for you to take), antihistamines and sleeping with your head propped up on 3 pillows to help drainage of fluid overnight.
​
• Bruising is common following treatment; this will resolve naturally but may take up to 2 weeks to settle.
​
• Regular application of Arnica cream may be helpful for bruising.
​
• Tenderness is normal when the injected area is touched afterwards but active pain at rest is not normal. If you experience pain, you must contact your practitioner as soon as possible.
​
• Drink plenty of water after treatment to keep well hydrated.
What to Avoid
​
• Avoid any makeup for 24 hours after treatment as this will reduce the risk of
infection.
​
• Avoid alcohol, caffeine, hot drinks and spicy food for 24 hours.
​
• Avoid medications such as aspirin or Ibuprofen for 24 hours as they are blood
thinning agents and may worsen bruising (if these medications have been
advised by your GP you must check with your GP before stopping them)
• Avoid supplements such as multivitamins, fish oils, glucosamine and Vitamin B or
Vitamin E, which are blood thinning agents and may exacerbate bruising for 24 hours (if these supplements have been advised by your GP please check with your GP before stopping them)
• Avoid any excess sun exposure, extremes of hot/cold, saunas, swimming or strenuous exercise until the redness and swelling has settled.
• A rare complication of dermal fillers is vascular occlusion in which a blood vessel is accidentally blocked with filler. Signs and symptoms include throbbing and aching pain which can be severe, paleness, a cold feeling to the tissue and purple streaky mottling tissue changes. If you notice any of these symptoms you must contact your practitioner as soon as possible, they will guide you through how to perform a capillary refill test and then assess you fully and advise further action if required.
What To Look Out For

• You must seek medical attention and contact your practitioner if you experience any signs or symptoms of infection after treatment. Infection can present as hot, red shiny skin, there may be pus formation and you may have a fever or feel generally unwell.
• You must seek emergency medical attention if you experience any severe allergy symptoms after treatment. Symptoms may include rash, facial swelling and breathing difficulties.
• You must contact your practitioner as an emergency is you notice any visual disturbance or loss of vision after the filler injections.
• Contact your practitioner as soon as possible if you notice any other unwanted side effects.
• Results can be assessed at 2 weeks, by when any residual swelling will have settled.
​
Top Ups
• You may require a top up appointment if there is some mild unevenness or
discrepancies noticed once the initial swelling has resolved. Top ups should not be done until 2 weeks, this is when all post-injection swelling would have resolved.
Micro Needling
Normal Side Effects and How to Manage Them
• The treated area of skin may feel slightly tender and appear red and swollen afterwards. You may occasionally experience skin peeling and appearances may be similar to mild sunburn. These effects will resolve naturally and should be much improved after 48 hours but may take longer to settle. You may experience some minor bruising which may take 1-2 weeks to resolve in some cases.
• Use a mild cleanser with tepid water to clean your face for 3 days after the treatment and gently dry the treated area. Keep your hands clean when touching your face.
• Wear SPF 30 or greater sunscreen for at least 2 weeks following treatment as
your skin will be more sensitive to sunlight afterwards

• Avoid any makeup for 24 hours after treatment as this can increase the risk of infection.
• Avoid rubbing or picking the treated area.
• Avoid any skin exfoliation for 72 hours following treatment.
• It is important to use a regular moisturising cream around two to three times a
day on the treated area. Use more regularly if you feel the skin dry or peeling.
• Avoid any products that contain alpha hydroxy acids, retinol, and glycolic acid for
at least 7 days after treatment.
• Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, sunbeds and exposure to heat for 72 hours
after treatment. These can cause sweating which can irritate the delicate skin
and slow down your ability to heal quickly.
• Avoid swimming for 72 hours after treatment.
• Avoid any excess alcohol or caffeine for 48 hours after treatment.
• Avoid any further cosmetic treatments e.g. Botox or dermal filler for 2 weeks
following treatment, or ask your practitioner for advice.
• Avoid any hair removal treatments such as waxing for 2 weeks after treatment or
until the initial redness and swelling has resolved.
